"The tale of the princess kaguya" is an anime that really needs more attention, though I have to say that it's not a movie for everybody, especially not for the average anime fan. It's a movie drama that presents what a noble woman has to go through in the mediaeval times of japan in order to be socially accepted and be called beautiful. It goes even a bit father and touches the controversy of the mediaeval believe that woman only need to be beautiful and to get a noble husband to be happy. But don't expect a deep psychological approach on this aspect, since it only barely goings into this topic. However, what you do see is the story of a little girl that tries to refuses these norms and that tries to be her old self which doesn't succeed and she becomes more and more that, what she didn't want to be.

This decision was made way too late leading to the girls unhappiness, since she had already seen the opposite world of joy and laughter on the countryside, which obviously is the one little kids will like more, but she still tries to, since she wants to make her father happy, who desperately believes her happiness lies in becomming a "noble princess. Now getting taught how to act as a noble woman and how to dress, she more and more wants to get back to her old home. The story is maybe similar presented as the american movie "Memorie of a Geisha" with only the main protagonist NOT wanting to become a beauty.

Me encantaría verla, el diseño y la estética me parecen muy originales y hermosos. Recently I watched Kaguyahime no monogatari. I personally think it was an awesome movie and it made my inner Pre-modern literature enthusiast fangirl all over the cinema. There was a minor addition to the original story, however, that I first considered a bit uncalled for. It's not that it was bad or that it took anything from the plot, but it seemed unnecessary. It's actually taken me a little while to understand that there was a reason for it that is not very apparent unless the viewers are familiarised with Japanese folktales. If it makes the movie better or worse, is a matter of personal opinion. Spoilers for a roughly 1000 year-old story follow. Kayuga has passed her life in Earth with her adoptive parents and has just revealed that she belongs, in fact, to the people of the moon, who are coming to take her back. She tells them that, when she was there, she had heard a woman singing a song, pining for Earth and the loved ones she left there; and that's one of the reasons why she wanted to know life as a human. In a brief flashback, we see the woman flying away from the seashore, while two male figures (a man and a child) look up, near a pine. It might seem that this scene has little to do with the main story, but it's actually trying to tie Kaguyahime's motivations to another traditional Japanese figure; providing a background for her visit to Earth within the folkloric "canon. This scene is a reference to Hagoromo, a noh play derived from an earlier tale, where a fisherman meets a Celestial Maiden whose feathered robe he steals. Although in the noh play he agrees to give it back after the Maiden dances for him, in previous versions, she is forced to remain with him as a wife and bear him a child, before she one day finds the robe that would let her return to Heaven. The husband is left behind, lamenting her disappearance. It is not hard to link the robe in this tale/play to the one Kaguyahime is forced to wear when she leaves her family. The two figures that appear by the sea, I believe, are precisely this fisherman and his son, and the pine recalls the one appearing in the noh play, where the Maiden had laid her magical clothes before the man takes them away from her. Not only that, if we consider the robe in the movie the same as this one, the reason the Celestial Maiden could return to Heaven once she found it was not that it let her fly back; it's actually that she would not care about the people she had grown to love anymore. I think it's an interesting way of putting two of the more iconic Celestial ladies of Japanese folklore not only in the same world, but also in the same timeline. This also helps to identify Kaguyahime's moon with actual Heaven, as the design of the final procession seems to emphasise. That's it. I just thought it was very cool. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. If anyone hasn't seen it yet, I recommend it.

[2] An American production team produced a heavily altered English version that used new scenes, sound and dubbing. The American production was released theatrically in the United States in the summer of 1963 by Universal International. Plot Mr. Tako, head of Pacific Pharmaceuticals, is frustrated with the television shows his company is sponsoring and wants something to boost his ratings. When a doctor tells Tako about a giant monster he discovered on the small Faro Island, Tako believes that it would be a brilliant idea to use the monster to gain publicity. Tako immediately sends two men, Sakurai and Kinsaburo, to find and bring back the monster. Meanwhile, the American submarine Seahawk gets caught in an iceberg. Around 1960, O'Brien came up with a proposed treatment, King Kong meets Frankenstein, 3] where Kong would fight against a giant version of Frankenstein's monster in San Francisco. [15] Suit actors Shoichi Hirose (King Kong) and Haruo Nakajima (Godzilla) were given a mostly free rein by Eiji Tsuburaya to choreograph their own moves. The men would rehearse for hours and would base their moves on that from professional wrestling (a sport that was growing in popularity in Japan. 16] in particular the movies of Toyonobori. [17] During pre-production, Ishirō Honda had toyed with the idea of using Willis O'Brien 's stop motion technique instead of the suitmation process used in the first two Godzilla films, but budgetary concerns prevented him from using the process, and the more cost efficient suitmation was used instead. However, some brief stop motion was used in a couple of quick sequences. One of these sequences was animated by Koichi Takano [18] who was a member of Eiji Tsuburaya's crew. A brand new Godzilla suit was designed for this film and some slight alterations were done to its overall appearance. These new features gave Godzilla a more reptilian/dinosaurian appearance. [19] Outside of the suit, a meter high model and a small puppet were also built. Another puppet (from the waist up) was also designed that had a nozzle in the mouth to spray out liquid mist simulating Godzilla's atomic breath. However the shots in the film where this prop was employed (far away shots of Godzilla breathing its atomic breath during its attack on the Arctic Military base) were ultimately cut from the film. Finally a separate prop of Godzilla's tail was also built for closeup practical shots when its tail would be used (such as the scene where Godzilla trips Kong with its tail. The King Kong suit for this film has widely been considered to be one of the least appealing and most insipid gorilla suits in film history [21] Sadamasa Arikawa (who worked with Eiji Tsuburaya) said that the sculptors had a hard time coming up with a King Kong suit that appeased Tsuburaya. [11] The first suit was rejected for being too fat with long legs giving Kong an almost cute look. [11] A few other designs were done before Tsuburaya would approve the final look that was ultimately used in the film. The suit was given two separate masks and two separate pairs of arms. Long arm extensions which contained poles inside the arms for Hirose to grab onto and with static immovable hands was used for long shots of Kong, while short human length arms were added to the suit for scenes that required Kong to grab items and wrestle with Godzilla. [22] Besides the suit with the two separate arm attachments, a meter high model and a puppet of Kong (used for closeups) were also built. [23] 24] As well, a huge prop of Kong's hand was built for the scene where he grabs Mie Hama (Fumiko) and carries her off. [25] Eiji Tsuburaya and an octopus wrangler work with a live octopus among the miniature huts. For the attack of the giant octopus, four live octopuses were used. They were forced to move among the miniature huts by having hot air blown onto them. After the filming of that scene was finished, three of the four were released. The fourth became special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya's dinner. Along with the live animals, two rubber octopus props were built, with the larger one being covered with plastic wrap to simulate mucus. Some stop motion tentacles were also created for the scene where the octopus grabs a native and tosses him. [26] Since King Kong was seen as the bigger draw (at the time, he was even more popular in Japan than Godzilla) and since Godzilla was still a villain at this point in the series, it led to the decision to not only give King Kong top billing, but also to present him as the winner of the climactic fight. Stock footage of a massive Earthquake from The Mysterians was employed to make the earthquake caused by Kong and Godzilla's plummet into the ocean much more violent than the tame tremor seen in the Japanese version. In 1970, director Ishiro Honda prepared an edited version of the film for the Champion Festival, a children's matinee program that showcased edited re-releases of older kaiju films along with cartoons and then-new kaiju films. In total, Honda edited out twenty-four minutes. Unfortunately, the cuts were done to the film's original negative for the Champion version, and as a result, the highest quality source for the cut footage was lost. For years all that was thought to remain of the uncut 1962 version was a faded, heavily damaged 16mm element from which rental prints had been made. 1980s restorations for home video integrated the 16mm deleted scenes into the 35mm Champion cut, resulting in wildly inconsistent picture quality. [46] In 1991, Toho issued a restored laserdisc incorporating rediscovered 35mm trims of the deleted footage. The resultant quality was far superior to previous reconstructions but not perfect; an abrupt cut and missing frames are evident whenever the master switches between the Champion cut and a 35mm trim within the same shot. This laserdisc master was utilized for Toho's 2001 DVD release with few changes. In an article about the film, it is incorrectly stated that there were two endings and "If you see King Kong vs Godzilla in Japan, Hong Kong or some Oriental sector of the world, Godzilla wins. 72] The article was reprinted in various issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland in the years following such as issues 51, and 114. This bit of incorrect info would be accepted as fact and persist for decades, transcending the medium and into the mainstream. For example, decades later in the 1980s the myth was still going strong. The Genus III edition of the popular board game Trivial Pursuit had a question that asked "Who wins in the Japanese version of King Kong vs. Godzilla. and states that the correct answer is "Godzilla. As well, through the years, this myth has been misreported by various members of the media, 73] and has been misreported by reputable news organizations such as The LA Times. [28] Since seeing the original Japanese-language versions of Godzilla movies was very hard to come by from a Western standpoint during this time period, it became easily believable. However, as more Westerners were able to view the original version of the film (especially after its availability on home video during the late 1980s) and gain access to Japanese publications about the film, the myth was dispelled. There is only one ending of this film. Both versions of the film end the same way: Kong and Godzilla crash into the ocean, and Kong is the only monster to emerge and swims home. In the American version, onlookers simply say, Godzilla has disappeared without a trace" and newly shot scenes of reporter Eric Carter have him watching Kong swim home on a viewscreen and wishing him luck on his long journey home. As the film ends and the screen fades to black, owari (the end) appears on screen. Godzilla's roar followed by Kong's is on the Japanese soundtrack. This was akin to the monsters' taking a bow or saying goodbye to the audience as at this point the film is over. In the American version, only Kong's roar is present on the soundtrack. In 1993, comic book artist Arthur Adams wrote and drew a one-page story that appeared in the anthology Urban Legends #1, published by Dark Horse Comics, which dispels the popular misconception about the two versions of King Kong vs. [74] Reboot In October 2015, Legendary announced plans to unite Godzilla and King Kong in a film together, currently titled Godzilla vs. Kong, set for a 2020 release date. Legendary plans to create a shared cinematic franchise "centered around Monarch" which "brings together Godzilla and Legendarys King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Grave of the Fireflies is certainly his most famous work to date – and thats for good reason; its brutal, unforgiving, and heart wrenching. The other film of his that Ive seen is the criminally under appreciated Only Yesterday, which, by enjoyment alone, would be my favourite Ghibli movie, thanks to what I would consider to be the best final sequence in cinematic history. Having immensely enjoyed two of his works already, I was expecting much the same the third time around, and thats exactly what I got. Kaguya-hime was, in a word, beautiful – visually, conceptually, and in its delivery. A Famous Story: I was already familiar with some of the details of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter – the Japanese folktale on which this is based – so I had a rough idea on what was being set up early on. Thankfully, I didnt what know was going to happen throughout most of the film, and so was left both satisfied and surprised by the developments surrounding Kaguya, her journey, and where she came from. Looking back at some key scenes earlier on, the imagery was certainly there for the reveal in the end, which I appreciate. As a whole, the story was a simple one: a girl from the countryside is destined for riches, and so is sent off to a world of wonder to prepare for her new life. Theres the classic rebellious behaviour, a strict teacher, and suitors at the sidelines all fighting for the affection of the most beautiful girl in the capital, worthy of the name Kaguya. As one would expect, Kaguya ( Asakura Aki) was the standout character of the film. She was believable in her actions, her feelings, and her compromises. Whilst the foundation for the story has been done time and time again, Kaguyas character brought it to that higher level. Its interesting to me that the two best moments of the film are both of her running – the first is when she arrives at the mansion with her new robe, racing through the corridors, bumping into folk doing their work, before dashing off again, laughing as she goes. It was a moment of pure bliss that sent a rush right through me, as if Kaguyas joy was tangible. The second – and I imagine the most memorable scene for many – is her escape from her banquet. The shift in art was so sudden, and so incredibly effective – my heart was pumping as she smashed through the walls, flung off her rainbow robes and ran into the moonlight, into the snow, all the way back to her home. It was invigorating to watch, and for as stunning as it looked, both those scenes were made that much more special thanks to the Joe Hisaishi, who returned to do the soundtrack for Kaguya-hime, and did a marvellous job. Animation as Art: Its important to highlight just how stunning the artwork is in this one. I dont think Ive ever quite seen any animated piece like this – to this degree, or length, at least. Whilst I can see why it might be off-putting in the first few minutes, trust me, youll be grateful for it as it goes on. I found myself baffled at how well-crafted and rough it managed to be at the same time. I liked it when the lines were slightly off, when it became scratchy and the palette got the occasional burst of colour (like from Kaguyas robes. Another effective element is the atmospheres in the countryside and the capital; both in their visuals, as well as how they were used in the story. When Kaguya returns (in what I assume was some sort of dream) the colours are dulled, reflecting how times have changed, her friends have moved on, and that spring was no longer in full bloom. Compare that to the end, more than three years later, when Kaguya and Sutemaru ( Koura Kengo) re-unite in the field, when the palette is brimming with vibrancy and everything seems perfect, if just for a moment. One theme that resonated with me the most whilst watching was being in charge of ones own life. We see it with the Bamboo Cutter ( Chii Takeo) who finds Kaguya, idolises her as a princess, and is dedicated to make her one. He tries to do everything he can to give his new daughter the life he thinks she deserves, but never stops to ask her what it is she actually wants. Ona ( Miyamoto Nobuka) and Kaguya have a closer relationship when it comes to understanding, with their back garden modelled like their old village, and the tender moments they share together where both try to escape from the hectic palace life. Kaguya doesnt seem to have any big plans for her future, but after being led around for too long, her inner wish is granted when she has to return from where she came. It was a moment that was emotional, tragic, but oddly relieving as well, to see her be set free and not have to life her life in a cage, unable to do what she pleases. Overview – Final Impressions: If I were to summarise Kaguya-hime, I would say that its very rare to see so much time, effort, and passion came across on the screen as it does here. I felt every second of this film, even if it did drag in the middle and could have been tighter overall. But in a way Im glad it wasnt. Im glad it lingered and had everything play out the way it did. It has to be said that Kaguya-hime was brilliant, beautiful, and a story Im glad was told, especially as one of Studio Ghiblis last films. The following were my thoughts upon seeing Kaguyahime in the theatre soon after it was released. Samu-kun has kindly asked me to share them in this post. – Guardian Enzo Its always a thrill to be in the presence of true genius. Takahata Isao, the 78 year-old “other” of Studio Ghiblis two old lions, is never going to be as well known as his good friend Miyazaki Hayao. His movies are never going to sell as many tickets in Japan, and may never even see a theatrical release in the West. If indeed Kaguya-hime no Monogatari is his last film, as seems very likely, hes rarely if ever going to be mentioned when the conversation turns to the greatest animation directors of our time. But he should be, and Kaguya-hime is a wonderful way to put the exclamation point on the argument his small but superb catalogue makes to that effect. I can say this much – this is a beautiful, powerful film that moved me very deeply. Its always an interesting status check for me when I see an anime film in raw form, and indeed I did find that – much to my satisfaction – Im understanding more of the dialogue now than ever before (though a pause button would surely come in handy. But this is such a timeless and elemental story that the feelings largely transcend linguistic barriers, and I suspect even a viewer with no Japanese skills would have understood the gist of the story. Takahata hasnt made many films – this is only his fifth as a Director for Ghibli in 27 years – but the ones hes made have counted. I still consider Grave of the Fireflies one of the saddest and most profound films in any language or medium (Roger Ebert called it the greatest anti-war film ever made) and I have a special soft spot for My Neighbors the Yamadas (which was a rare commercial failure for Ghibli. Takahatas style both in terms of visuals and storytelling is as different from Miyazakis as night and day, though theyve worked together on many film and TV projects – Takahata is a much more spare and elegant filmmaker, and if youve seen the previews for Kaguya-hime you know that its pretty much an impressionistic work, choosing shading and contrast over detail and a rainbow of colors. But dont let that fool you – the detail is wonderful and the animation top cailber, and this is one of the most striking and beautiful anime in many years. Some of you may be familiar with “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”, the 10th-Century Japanese folk tale on which this movie is based (every Japanese person old enough to read certainly is. I certainly knew going in that this was going to be an emotional story, but I confess I was a bit put off by the woman sitting next to be who was, no exaggeration, quite audibly crying for about 110 of the 137-minute running time. But for the last 15 minutes of the film, I was wrecked – this makes twice now Takahata has completely reduced me to helpless tears, though the themes could hardly be more different. I hate to keep harping on mono no aware but its so deeply entrenched in the Japanese storytelling tradition, and it imbues every pore of the “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”. And Takahata does a magnificent job capturing the emotion of the story on film with his understated, direct style – this feelings at work here are incredibly elemental and universal. Theres no simpler or more powerful story than that of the joy opening your heart to love can bring, and the pain which accompanies the inevitable parting that comes with every loving relationship in the end. For my money Kaguya-hime no Monogatari is certainly the best anime film of 2013, which of course also means its the best Ghibli film of the year. Thats not a knock on Kaze no Tachinu, but a reflection of how beautiful and profound this movie is. My strong emotional reaction to the films closing moments was no doubt enhanced by the sense that it very much represents the end of an era – Miyazaki has announced that Kaze no Tachinu was his final film, and Takahata-sensei is 78 years old. If indeed these are the capstones to their careers I think theyre good ones – but more than that, anime fans and lovers of great cinema should feel very grateful to have lived in a time when two such geniuses were sharing their vision. Other visionaries are already making their mark on the anime world, but Takahata and Miyazaki are unique and irreplaceable figures, and were not likely to see their like again.

You're japanese accent is not bad, but... KEmono, not KImono. The story itself starts off very slowly, especially with her being a baby. The childhood feels uninteresting at first but is later appreciated because of the built up to her emotions and the part with her being in the capital was made in a fitting pacing to keep you interested.

Oh my. this is. INCREDIBLE. Why wasn't I informed of this! The animation looks ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL and it looks VERY promising, especially since 2D animation is my favorite. How did I not see any of this movie's trailers in theaters before it came out? I CANNOT believe I missed it. D: Ok, maybe I still have time, checks release date on Flixster Oh it already came out on December last year? DAMN IT. Oh wait it comes out on DVD on March 17, AWESOME, so I won't have to wait any longer, I'll rent it at RedBox and if I like it, then I buy the Blu-ray DVD for it.
